For a few decades, the artists Poul Gernes and Aase Gernes were responsible for the distinctive and colorful enhancement of a large number of public buildings in Denmark. Many remember and have an opinion about the bold and vivid patterns on the Palads Cinema building in Copenhagen. The Gernes’ love of color was rooted in their perception of the importance of color for our quality of life and our health. According to them, color could stimulate the mind, mood, sense of identity and of humanity, and they openly criticised the lack of both color and the understanding of color in our urban environment.
‘Så Gernes’ light installation is based on the Gernes’ love and understanding of color. Inspired by a number of their public color treatments, our light installation creates a spatial and dynamic experience of color with the use of both subtractive and additive color.

Poul and Aase Gernes were aware of the effect of artificial light on the human perception of color. This particular relationship is in focus in our installation. The work plays with human spatial perception, the physiology of the eye as well as the brain's perception and interpretation of what is seen at a given moment, based on the interaction between color, pattern and lighting. This is where some of the magic of color lies.
